ENDODONTICS

Pulp pathologies

Endodontics is the specialist area of Dental Medicine aiming at treating pulp (nerve) pathologies, such as deep cavities, traumatisms or fractures. In endodontic treatment (root canal), all of the existing content inside the root canal system is removed. As a way to prevent contamination by pre-existent bacteria, all procedures are performed in complete isolation, resorting to a rubber dam. Following treatment, any pain, discomfort, and sensitivity should disappear.

The specialty has evolved considerably over the last few years: techniques such as have been developed and there is now deeper understanding of the results certain root canal disinfection products have, developments which enable, in the long run, better prognoses.
